Gum Disease

Gum disease can have disastrous consequences on your oral and overall health. The beginning stages, however, may go unnoticed as symptoms usually include bleeding gums when you eat, brush, or floss, or chronic bad breath. What many patients do not realize on time is that these symptoms are, in fact, a sign that a more serious condition needs to be addressed. When toxins from oral bacteria have a chance to build up in the mouth, they begin to destroy the gums and bone. Dr. Constance offers gum disease treatment in her office to help you maintain healthy teeth and gums and enjoy improved oral health.

Gum disease occurs in three stages: gingivitis, periodontitis, and advanced periodontitis. During the initial stage of gingivitis, you may experience tender or bleeding gums, but this stage is reversible with timely treatment. In the second stage, symptoms progress and plaque can build up below the gum line, deepening the periodontal “pockets” and causing harm to the gums. In the final stage of gum disease, significant bone deterioration occurs, causing the teeth to loosen. In this most severe stage, teeth are at a high risk for being lost or removed and systemic health complications may arise, including heart disease and diabetes.

While it is critical to catch gum disease early, measures can be taken at any stage to help lessen the effects and help maintain your oral health. Dr. Constance offers a variety of gum disease treatments targeted to the specific stage of gum disease and the current condition of your oral health. We will assess your dental health during your evaluation and determine the best treatment plan from there.
